Native forest
in Greater Chaco

The objective of this project is to generate local capacities in the community of the diocese of Añatuya, one of the most inhospitable regions of the country, through the recovery of the production capacities of goods and ecosystem services of the forest through planting and sustainable management of white carob (Prosopis Alba) as the main species.

The place is located in Santiago del Estero and is part of the greater Chaco, covering 68,000 km2 and around 150,000 inhabitants (a density of 2.20%). This large area and small population means that they live in small towns and isolated ranches surrounded by mountains.

Forest Project

Plant, reforest and enrich native forests with a forest cover of 500,000 trees (in the yellow and green areas of the forest law), in 1,248 hectares of the field el Majan del obispado to establish a CO2 sink for 30 years, sharing with the community what is produced by the fruits of the forest, the control, maintenance and care of the forest for said period. In this scenario, a cumulative total of 748,800 certificates is obtained for a time horizon of 30 years, with an annual average of 24,960 certificates (each certificate corresponds to 1tn).

Social impact

The project helps to include the community through training to work in the afforestation project, creating “green jobs.” In the first stage, it accompanies the San Benito de Santos Lugares Agrotechnical School owned by the Diocese in the training and management of undertakings related to the promotion of the forest. The main lines that are sought to be developed are:

-Beekeeping, and all its derivatives
-Carob flour (export lines already exist) and its derivatives
-Essences
-Forage derived from fruits of the forest
-Nursery jobs

The horizon of the project is to be able to generate brands for the products, training, marketing lines and monitoring of the ventures associated with the development of forestry production.
